Aider

AI pair programming in your terminal — edit code in your local git repo with GPT-4 or Claude.

Terminal / CLIfree4.5 from 490 reviewsSource verified

Detailed overview

Aider is an open-source, terminal-based AI pair programming tool that connects to cloud LLMs (Claude 3.7 Sonnet, DeepSeek R1/V3, OpenAI o1/o3-mini/GPT-4o) or local models to help build new projects or extend existing codebases. It builds a map of the entire codebase so the AI has relevant context even in large projects, and supports 100+ programming languages including Python, JavaScript, Rust, Ruby, Go, C++, PHP, HTML, and CSS. Aider integrates with git, automatically committing changes with descriptive messages so developers can diff, review, and undo AI edits using standard git tooling. It can be invoked from within an IDE via code comments, accepts images and web pages as context, supports voice-to-code requests, and automatically lints and tests code, fixing issues it detects. For models without direct API access, Aider also supports a copy/paste workflow with a web chat interface. It requires users to supply their own API keys.
