Detailed overview
Plandex is an open-source, terminal-based AI coding agent designed for large, real-world software projects that span many files and steps. It can handle up to 2M tokens of context directly and index projects of 20M+ tokens using tree-sitter maps, letting it plan and execute large multi-file refactors, feature builds, and full app scaffolding. A diff review sandbox isolates AI-generated changes from the codebase until approved, with rollback and command execution controls. Users can combine models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and open-source providers via curated model packs, and choose between full autonomous execution or step-by-step review. Plandex includes automated debugging of builds, tests, and scripts, a project-aware chat mode, git integration with commit generation, and version control with branching for comparing approaches. It installs via a one-line CLI and can run self-hosted via Docker; Plandex Cloud is winding down and no longer accepting new users. Windows support requires WSL.
